Local Beat

An offline music and audiobook player that installs from the browser. Your own files stay on the device, with no accounts or subscriptions. I designed and built it.

Overview

Local Beat plays music and audiobooks the listener already owns. Files are imported from the device, stored in the browser and available offline, with playlists, a full-screen player and lock-screen controls. It is a Progressive Web App: add it to the home screen from Safari or Chrome and it opens like a native app.

The goal

Make local audio files easy to organise and play on a phone, offline and with the screen locked, without a server or an account.

What I built

I built a React PWA that stores audio, covers and playlists in IndexedDB and caches only the app shell. It reads track metadata and cover art on import, and the player uses the Media Session API for lock-screen and headphone controls.

Delivered

  • Unlimited playlists with file and whole-folder import
  • Full-screen and mini players with shuffle, repeat and lock-screen controls
  • Audiobook library with chapters and listening progress
  • Installable offline app; music never leaves the device

Install it like a native app

This is a Progressive Web App. Add it to your phone's home screen and it opens full screen like a native app, without an app store, and keeps working offline.

  • iPhone and iPad: open the site in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
  • Android: open the site in Chrome, open the menu and tap Install app or Add to Home screen.
